Hi beauty lovers. It’s time for another review, one I’ve been debating whether or not I should make it. Jeffree Star Cosmetics is a fairly new, wildly discussed indie-brand in the makeup world. They only carry a bunch of liquid lipsticks, some highlighters, an eyeshadow palette and some lipscrubs and that’s it! In this review I cover the quality, the shipping costs and also a little bit of the controversy around Jeffree’s persona. Curious? Then keep on reading!
Today I’m only going to talk about the liquid lipsticks, since this is the product it all started with. Jeffree Star is a very outspoken, controversial and passionate figure in the beauty world. After having toured with his music and having become a YouTube sensation, he came out with his own makeup-line. It started with three colors and quickly grew to something much bigger.
Since this is an indie brand, these lipsticks can be hard to come by. The only way to get them are through ordering from Jeffree’s site, or from select Morphe Brushes stores in California (other sellers are mentioned on his website). Half the time, most products are sold out, but if you keep track of Jeffree’s snapchat, instagram or twitter, you’ll know when he restocks (Pssh, this is a complete coincidence but I believe he’s restocking his Skinfrosts today!). One liquid lipstick retails for 18$, which is about 16€ and shipping is 10,95$ (worldwide). The package is shipped from California, which means you’ll have to pay custom fees if you live in Europe.
If you only buy one, you’re safe from extra costs, but once you buy for more than 22€, extra fees will be charged! This means one liquid lipstick will cost you 28,95$ (26€), which is rather expensive, I admit. If you buy more than one, you’ll pay custom fees. Something to keep in mind.
From top to bottom: Mannequin – Gemini – Rose Matter – Androgyny – Rich Blood – Unicorn Blood.
I swatched these and didn’t let them dry completely. Yet, they were impossible to get off; I still have stains on my arms almost 10 hours later. The wear of these is incredible!
This is a shade I thought I would hate but I fell in love with it. It’s just the perfect nude. I’ve noticed it looks different on everyone! When I wear it, it seems to have a pink undertone but when some other people wear it, it’s more brown-y. Very remarkable. But, this color stays put all day and is 100% transfer proof (doesn’t smudge or move when I drink, eat or kiss). After a few hours of wear you might need to re-apply on the sides, but that’s normal for any liquid lipstick.
One of my favorites for a few reasons! First of all, I am a Gemini myself, so that’s nice. But it’s also the perfect everyday color. This literally looks good with any type of makeup look, whether you want to go heavy on the eyes or if you’re going for a more subtle look. This browny nude also stays on all day, it’s incredible. If you’re looking for a brown-y nude, this is the one for you.
This is another one I thought I wouldn’t particularly like, but now love anyway. It’s this dusty, old pink kinda color on me which looks surprisingly good. Usually, pinks just don’t suit me at all, but this pink seems to work for everyone. It’s not too much in your face, but it isn’t too subtle either. The perfect pink!
Androgyny is a very special kind of dusty purple. I wore it in my Benefit Brow Review as well, if you want to see more pictures. It’s a very wearable kind of purple, it’s not too bright. Perfect if you want to try wearing purple, but are afraid it might not be your cup of tea.
I have a love-hate relationship with this lipstick. It’s the most perfect red, there’s no doubt. It has tiny blue/pink glitter particles in it, which gives it a very interesting shine. But, this is the only liquid lipstick in JS’s line with tiny glitters, which means the formula is a little bit different. I noticed that it’s not transfer proof. It also looks ugly after I’ve eaten or after about 2hours of wear. I know the formula is different but the quality should be the same as the others.
Unicorn Blood is a favorite of many and I must admit, I like it as well. Not as much as the others though, because it is a tiny bit streaky. I also feel that it doesn’t stay as well as the other, lighter colors. Nevertheless, this is a very beautiful color, perfect for the fall season.
On a sidenote, I do want to mention the applicator! This is amazing, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It has this little ‘dent’ which makes application super easy! It really enables you to get into those tiny corners, without smudging. You also only need one pump of product, so these lipsticks will last you forever.
Lastly, I’d like to address some of the controversy that has been happening around Jeffree Star himself. Jeffree is a very outspoken, passionate, out-there person. If you google him, you’ll find as many positive things about him as negative comments. He’s been called a racist, a liar, etc. I’m not here to bash him or say those accusations are untrue. I bought the products before I knew about certain racist slurs he has outed and I will keep on using them since I payed good money for those. As for the future, I’m not sure yet if I will buy again from him. He’s apologized for a lot of things in the past, but not (as far as I know) for his racist comments. This kind of rubs me the wrong way, which is why I am hesitant to buy anything soon in the future, but I might. It all depends on him. I will also add that, however he’s been a jerk to some people, he also does a lot of good work for charity.
If you can separate the person from the product, then these products are wonderful. There’s a big variety of wearable and more outspoken colors, the staying power is generally amazing, the costumer service deserves an A+ (They forgot to add Gemini to my order, I mailed and within the week I got Gemini anyway) etc.
Disadvantages are: custom fees, 2-3 weeks before the package arrives (incl. customs), and a rather controversial brand owner.
Would you guys be interested in a review of the Beauty Killer Palette? I’ve talked about Jeffree Star Cosmetic’s Skin Frost in my highlighter post, but I might review his eyeshadow palette too. Let me know if you’d like that!
