Hello beautylovers. For the past few months, I’ve been searching for the perfect matte liquid lipstick. And the search continues. The fact that I’m a tiny bit obsessed with liquid lipsticks does help. I had been wanting to order Kylie Cosmetics’ lipkits for a while now, but for me, one kit was just too expensive when living overseas (think shipping costs, custom fees, taxes…). Then she released her Birthday Collection with this mini mattes kit. I got it and put it to the test. Want to know my thoughts about these crazy popular products? Then keep on reading.
To start off, this was a limited edition type of product. Right now, it’s not possible to get the kit again. However, she has unexpectedly relaunched some products of her birthday collection anyway, so the kit might come back. Most of the colors are available on their own though, which is why I thought it would be useful to review them anyway.
The packaging of this product is simply flawless. The normal black detailing has been switched for gold, which is fitting since it’s her birthday. For $36, you get six mini liquid lipsticks: 4 classic colors, one new color and one limited edition color.
(excuse my sticker tattoo ?) From left to right: Exposed, Dolce K, Koko K, Candy K, Kirsten & Leo. As you can see, some of them swatch very opec, others not so much.
This color is okay-ish. It has an orange undertone, which can be unflattering. In certain lighting this color turns out to be gorgeous though. The formula is very dry. Usually I can handle dry formulas pretty well, but this immediately settles into the fine lines. It’s not super uncomfortable, but it’s not the best either.
This color is one of my favorites out of the bunch. Dolce K is your typical 90s brown color. It applies real smooth and stays on pretty well too. I really wish this kit came with the lip-pencil as well though, I think it would help apply these lipsticks smoother and more even.
I really dislike this one. It just doesn’t dry well on my lips. I feel like Koko K would really benefit from being used with the lip pencil. It doesn’t stay on either… When I eat it rubs off and looks horrible. Koko K is definitely a pass for me.
Candy K is my favorite everyday color. If you’re planning on only buying one lipkit, and you want it to be an easy-to-wear color, I would definitely recommend this one. It feels comfortable (more so than Exposed) and doesn’t crease as much.
Drumroll….. Kirsten is the absolute winner in this set. (Sorry for sloppy application, after trying out 5 liquid lipsticks, my lips were kinda dead). It applies super easy, doesn’t crease, feels comfortable and stays on all damn day. Literally though, this one just won’t come off.
This is what it looks like after 5 minutes of rubbing with a makeup remover. This might look a little scary (sorry for that) but it’s a good thing. After eating, drinking… living, it stays on perfectly. I only had to touch up about 2 times in a whole day, which is pretty good.
Unfortunately, we’re ending with another one I hate. Leo is terrible to work with. It’s super streaky and doesn’t apply easily. It’s very hard to make to lines look crisp. Of course, my lips were battered after trying out 6 shades, so that didn’t help either, but this color just doesn’t work well in general. Especially compared to Jeffree Star’s Unicorn Blood, which I reviewed a few weeks ago and which is pretty much the same color, this is a no no. Maybe it works better with the lip pencil, but for the pricepoint, it should be better. Maybe it’s a good thing this was a limited edition color.
At the end of the day, these liquid lipsticks are beautiful and a real collector’s item. They’re perfect to take pictures off and they’re not that bad. But when you live overseas, and you pay almost $70 (!) for the kit, it better be freaking perfect. Which it was not. I only recommend this product when you live in the States and you want an easy way to try out different colors of Kylie’s line without wanting to buy the full-sized products. If you live in Europe, or somewhere else in the world that’s not America, I don’t really think it’s worth the splurge. Sure, they’re pretty to look at, but there’s so many other great liquid lipsticks available closer by and for a better price.
Are you getting or already owning any of the Kylie Cosmetics products? Let me know what you think about them!
Have a lovely day!
